The New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals squared off in a thrilling Week one battle. The Patriots Pulled off a stunning 23-21 win over the heavily favored Cardinals on Sunday night. What a terrific game by Jimmy Garoppolo. He showed his leadership and his poise out there on the field. Garoppolo threw for 264 yards and a touchdown. He hit his favorite receiving target, Julian Edelman, 6 times and 66 yards. Tight end Martellus Bennett played a different role by blocking and opening up gaps for running back LeGarrette Blount who had 70 yards rushing on the ground.
The big story was the overall performances by backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He was impressive extending plays with his feet and completing key third down passes. In Garoppolo’s debut game he showed his doubters he could play football. Garoppolo delivered with a performance that has the fans in New England convinced he could carry this team in his next three games.
The New England Patriots played through adversity last night with injuries to their All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski and two key offensive linemen Sebastian Vollmer and Jonathan Cooper. Josh McDaniel’s drew up a great line scheme to protect Garoppolo in the pocket to give him time to find his receivers. Give this offensive line some credit; they held their own against a good Arizona defensive line. Despite the Patriots defensive captain Rob Ninkovich being injured the defense played solid holding Arizona’s explosive offensive to a minimum. Arizona’s kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal that could have won the game. New England still has to improve in some areas, but last night they played disciplined football. This win will give this team a boost heading into their three game home schedule. The Patriot are already the leaders of the AFC East division .The Jets, Bills and Dolphins all lost in Week one.
